Sustainable Menstrual Products: Washable Pads

Difficulty Level: Medium

Making the transition to reusable menstrual products has been one of the more difficult swaps for me. The main obstacle for me was getting over my habit of using disposable products and the mindset that it felt more sanitary.

The Options

Diva Cups

I’ve heard a lot about diva cups, which are inserted similar to a tampon, and collect menstrual fluids. This has never felt like the right option for me. After trying some different methods in the past, I found that I preferred pads to tampons.

Washable Pads

There are several types of washable pads from panty liners to extra long and absorbant. I chose the long and absorbent style. One of the reasons I selected this style is because I wanted it to work for overnights (and it does!).

My Experience

The pads last me about 12 - 24 hours depending on whether I’m at the beginning or end of the week. I was really happy with the level of absorption. When it was time to take off the pad, I washed it out with soap and water before putting it in the washing machine. It was amazing to see the amount of fluids that were absorbed. I’ve only tried washing them after pre-rinsing, but they washed up really well for me.
