Make Me a Sustainable Cup of Tea

Zero Waste Tea

If you drink tea then you should try this swap. It’s relatively easy, with the right supplies, and removes the need for individual tea bags, those plastic bags that hold them, and the box that they’re packaged in. I love this swap!

To start drinking zero waste tea you’ll need a metal tea strainer or metal tea bag. Then you’ll need tea leaves. At the refill store you can buy loose leaf tea and package it in your own jar. My favourite tea flavours are earl gray and herbal blends.

I have tried tea that comes in compostable packaging (even the “plastic” bag, which is actually a biodegradable material). This is an option to reduce your waste, and add to the mix for a super easy cup of tea every so often.

STEPS

  1. Purchase loose leaf tea and metal tea strainer

  2. Put about a teaspoon of tea into the strainer

  3. Boil water and fill cup with hot water, then add the tea strainer

  4. Let the tea steep for the appropriate amount of time (about four minutes)

  5. Remove tea strainer and keep it in a clean cup. Allow the tea leaves to dry and you can use them again!

  6. Enjoy your tea :)
